Concordia Community Chorus

Artistic Director · Registration Information

Concordia Community ChorusThe Concordia Community Chorus, under Dr. Joy Berg is a 160-voice non-auditioned choral ensemble.  It is open to both Concordia students and members of the area community.  Each season there is potential for an auditioned Chamber Choir from within the group.

The performance schedule includes annual participation in the Sacred Music Festival, A Concordia Christmas, singing at the Legislature, and a spring concert.  It has sung at the Alberta Music Conference and the Alberta Legislature, and has recently (early November, 2005) returned from participating with a performance of Haydn's Paukenmesse on stage at Carnegie Hall in New York.

The Community Chorus recently had the privilege to sing at Carnegie Hall in New York (Nov. 6, 2005), performing Haydn’s Paukenmesse under the direction of Dr. Richard Sparks. 95 singers from the Chorus participated, and with others associated with the Chorus, we had a total of 126 people in New York for this occasion. We stayed at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, took a trip up the Empire State Building, saw various shows on and off Broadway and at the Metropolitan Opera, and did some shopping! Use this website to view pictures (and share, for those of you in Chorus) of our time.

The repertoire of the choir is varied, including works with orchestra to lighter classics and seasonal favourites.

Alberta Foundation for the Arts LogoStarting in 2004-2005, the ensemble received grant support from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts in support of its mission and mandate. The Chorus has performed newly-commissioned works as well. Last year, the Chorus commissioned a work for brass, choir and organ from Gordon Hafso; this current year (2005-6) the Chorus will be premiering a new work written for the Concordia Chorus and Orchestra, "Amen", by Edmonton composer Joseph Lai.
