Sacred Music Festival

Davis OrganThe Sacred Music Festival, held annually at the end of October, is designed to be both a celebration of performance of sacred music, and a chance for the audience to fully participate in congregational song. Inaugurated in 2001, the Sacred Music Festival involves numerous ensembles from the School of Music, including the Concert Choir, the Community Chorus, and Sine Nomine. Lorne Manweiler is the featured organist. Starting in 2002, the event was held at the Francis Winspear Centre for Music using the new Davis Concert Organ and it welcomed the Council of Edmonton Lutheran Churches as a sponsor. In 2004, the program was offered at the Jack Singer Hall in the Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts in Calgary, in addition to the one at the Francis Winspear Centre for Music in Edmonton.

“Abendlied: Evening Song” is the title and focus of this year’s Sacred Music Festival.  The centerpiece is Schubert’s Mass in G, performed by the three mixed choirs present for this concert:  Concordia Concert Choir, Concordia Community Chorus, and Sine Nomine.  Also in the family of choirs this year at the Festival is Bella Voce Concordia (women’s choir), the newly-formed men’s choir, Maennechor, as well as Jubiloso! Bells of Concordia.  This concert will feature soloists Debbie Rice, John Brough, and Michael Kurschat, and trumpeter Adam Franzke.  The audience will invited join in on the singing, with evening hymns to fit the theme of the Festival.
